Photographic Tip Number 7

Female Mallard Duck, captured in the Woodland Gardens in Bushy Park, last autumn.

Complementary Colours

Brimstone butterfly, captured at The London Wetland Centre

Before pressing your finger on the shutter, have you placed your subject in the best place? Certain colours go better together, take blue and yellow, for instance. If in doubt, google the colour wheel and you’ll find what works best. So, before you take your picture, see whether moving your position might improve the final image. With nature, this isn’t always so easy, as they are constantly on the move but with a little patience you can get some fabulous results (three quarters of an hour for the butterfly above). Getting down on my hands and knees helped capture the mallard duck in the colours of autumn.

A field of Rape in spring is always a fun subject to capture, especially against a beautiful blue sky.

Orange Tip butterfly

Sometimes, the same colour can work well together, here recently in Kensington Gardens and above with the Orange Tip butterfly.
